03:07:55 <goddess_ishtar> the grf specs still mention compatability with TTDPatch
03:08:03 <goddess_ishtar> do people actually still *use* TTDPatch?

05:36:08 <wensimehrp> You should do temperature in OpenTTD
05:39:48 <alfagamma0007> We should do at least a day night cycle in OpenTTD
05:40:05 <alfagamma0007> Weather cycle is a bit difficult I think
05:44:16 <wensimehrp> day night cycle would be nice
05:44:37 <wensimehrp> I know OpenRCT2 has an experimental approach on that

05:50:06 <wensimehrp> ...and it has certain bugs
06:00:42 <reldred> That’s a fun bug 😄
06:01:15 <reldred> Some magic colour values on a recolour sprite or something that can then trigger a shader effect or some nonsense.
06:01:45 <reldred> Would need somebody far far far smarter than I am though.
06:09:31 <goddess_ishtar> wensimehrp: the fun way of doing a day-night cycle, crashing
07:04:44 *** HerzogDeXtEr has joined #openttd
07:07:17 <gwyd4016> reldred: This was a game that did it very well: https://www.gamedeveloper.com/programming/graveyard-keeper-how-the-graphics-effects-are-made#close-modal
07:08:13 <pickpacket> Day night cycle in OpenTTD. Where the default length of that cycle would be about 2 seconds. Toggling between light and dark every other second...
07:09:45 <gwyd4016> Whole game is just constantly flashing
07:14:43 <reldred> Probably more useful with stretched out timescales, the 24hr scheduling folks playing with peaks and troughs would get more value out of it I think, but, a basic shader effect for seasons would work well with the default settings, grey overcast with the occasional rain SFX during winter, oranges/browns in autumn, yellow/green ish during spring.
07:15:26 <reldred> Could use the magic colour triggered lights during the winter season still instead of just during the day/night cycle.
07:17:35 <peter1139> Then you'd need a setting for which months are winter...
07:18:28 <wensimehrp> winter starting month and winter duration
07:21:31 <reldred> peter1139: Nah just force it on everyone.
07:21:50 <reldred> Or decide it by climate.
07:22:58 <reldred> Sub arctic forces longer/shorter days depending on time of year, sub tropic is forced southern hemisphere, temperate is england, as god and Chris sawyer intended.
07:23:14 <Heiki> also, water should freeze in the winter so that ships won’t move without an icebreaker NewGRF
07:24:20 <wensimehrp> some places are not that cold
07:26:41 <wensimehrp> not all places are that cold
07:26:41 <wensimehrp> in general most populated places that have water transportation are warm enough so that water won't freeze in the winter
07:26:41 <wensimehrp> even in places that are cold enough the rivers and seas usually won't freeze
08:20:04 <peter1139> Are trams a core gameplay mechanic, or just road vehicles that can't run on regular roads?
08:22:28 <truebrain> now you are asking the questions!
08:24:52 <peter1139> There's another forum thread with, shall we say, rhetoric...
08:29:48 <reldred> probably the only thing I can think of is the tram button should be hidden if no sets are loaded, doesn't it just grey out atm?
08:30:39 <peter1139> But infinite problems!
08:30:39 <reldred> yeah just sits there showing 'none'
08:31:12 <reldred> depths of madness!
08:31:16 <truebrain> reldred: but then how do you know it is even an option?! 😛
08:31:32 <reldred> truebrain: what they don't know can't hurt them

08:50:03 <truebrain> `So, as we have seen, LLMs are essentially confident-sounding lying machines with a penchant to occasionally disclose private data or plagiarise existing work. While they do this, they also use vast amounts of energy and are happy using all the GPUs you can throw at them which is a problem we’ve seen before in the field of cryptocurrencies.`
08:50:09 <truebrain> andythenorth: might not agree 😛
08:52:57 <goddess_ishtar> I mean at least you can actually do something with them that isn't crime or ugly jpegs
08:53:12 <goddess_ishtar> So instantly much better than crypto
08:53:19 <truebrain> (Was a quote from vivaldi's blog btw)
09:21:01 <peter1139> Yes. I'm not sure if he genuinely didn't know the energy cost of these things. Though to be fair most of the cost is the "training" rather than the queries.
09:26:27 <andythenorth> It’s early days on where the energy use goes. So far I’ve seen projections for “more electricity than India by 2027” and “maybe about the same as online gaming”
09:29:32 <peter1139> Alternatively, it's "more energy being used than if it wasn't being used".
09:29:54 <peter1139> "But Solar!"
09:32:46 <andythenorth> Yeah but no, it’s not net zero right now

10:45:31 <merni> andythenorth: I feel like that doesn't take into account India's growth :)
10:46:23 <merni> Especially with the climate heating up there are going to be a lot more ACs etc apart from the usual side-effects of (slow) development in the form of motor vehicles, fridges, TVs and so on
12:20:45 <DorpsGek> [OpenTTD/OpenTTD] JustLinuxUser updated pull request #12793: Feature: Make the graph UIs more usable https://github.com/OpenTTD/OpenTTD/pull/12793
12:22:02 <andriydohniak> Why is the gh notification not comming through? That is weird, anyway fixed the things peter1138 you commented about
12:25:40 <peter1139> Discord API delay, I guess.
12:26:43 <truebrain> an async Internet, who knew!
12:30:21 <peter1139> 30 year old C-code can be quite ugly. Who knew...
12:49:48 <peter1139> Declaring a function pointer with no parameters, so that you can pass different parameters and get no warning.
12:49:51 <peter1139> Yum?
12:51:36 <LordAro> dnf
12:54:19 <peter1139> Oh, no TDF coverage today on ITV4.
12:54:26 <LordAro> :o
13:16:47 <andythenorth> Someone told me it’s on ITVX
13:16:59 <andythenorth> (Whatever that is)
13:17:56 <peter1139> ITVX is the site/app.
13:18:20 <peter1139> Today they have Mr Bean until 14:30.
13:18:35 <peter1139> Then it does actually go to the TDF stage. So I was wrong, but it seems late...
13:19:13 <peter1139> Oh it's 25.3km.
13:19:22 <peter1139> So a time-trial instead.
13:19:39 <peter1139> Spot the cyclist who never usually bothers watching the TDF ;)
13:19:50 <peter1139> I miss the music from the 80s and 90s though.
13:23:27 <peter1139> And Phil Liggett of course.
13:35:10 <peter1139> Silly helmets. Bring back the steel bikes with proper geometry, and long flowing manes :p
13:38:27 <LordAro> haha
13:38:43 <LordAro> don't forget the rampant drug usage
13:39:05 <_glx_> and hidden electric motors
13:39:14 <truebrain> sometimes I wonder what channel I walked into 😛
13:39:19 <LordAro> there's never been any of those
13:39:34 <_glx_> some rumors last year IIRC
13:39:41 <LordAro> yeah, baseless ones
13:39:56 <LordAro> a single person in some lower rankings was caught (easily), and that's been it
13:40:25 <LordAro> and there certainly wasn't any of that in the 80s & 90s :p
