⏴ go to previous day
00:00:06 <PeterT> anyone planning on fixing it
00:00:07 <Eddi|zuHause> the whole game is full of bugs
00:00:17 <Eddi|zuHause> it would help if you could be slightly more specific
00:00:25 <PeterT> i know, but thats a fairly noticible bug
00:00:43 <Eddi|zuHause> nobody ever uses the giant screenshot
00:00:44 <PeterT> specific? i click giant screenshot and i get disconnected from my multiplayer game
00:01:01 <PeterT> and so do that 5 people that told me it was bugged
00:01:05 <Eddi|zuHause> so you can't expect people to notice
00:01:20 <Eddi|zuHause> and that sounds not like a bug
00:01:28 *** tokai|mdlx has joined #openttd
00:01:56 <Eddi|zuHause> it sounds like the game being stalled, and you getting kicked off for not being able to keep up
00:02:11 <PeterT> ok, lets try again, shall we?
00:02:21 <Eddi|zuHause> you could try to fork the screenshot process, like it is done with savegames
00:02:43 <Eddi|zuHause> the thing you eat with
00:03:00 <PeterT> i know, but thats not how your using it
00:06:20 <Svish> hm.... that reserved path overlay thing should be more visibale with maglevs...

00:49:13 <Chruker> meh, why does the GPL website taste like propaganda...
00:50:41 <Eddi|zuHause> does anything not taste like propaganda?
00:53:48 <Chruker> Statements like: "to distribute DVD players unless they restrict the user according to the official rules of the DVD conspiracy"
00:54:25 <Chruker> Or constantly calling DRM for Digital Restrictions Mismanagement
00:54:39 <reldred> Chruker: GNUtards are fundamentalist wackos of their own special kind...
00:54:42 <dragonhorseboy> well it is true.. DRM is stupid ;)
00:54:43 <Eddi|zuHause> well, that's exactly what it is ;)
00:54:58 <reldred> But their whole campaign is childish at best
00:55:37 <reldred> Sorry, shouldn't bash the GNU folks, they're alright, I'll just call them freetards instead
00:55:57 <Chruker> When I come to their site to read up on the details, I would expect it to be more 'grownup'
00:56:15 <Chruker> After all it is law stuff
00:56:16 <reldred> But then there is this very special kind of freetard whp's repsoinsible for a lot of the GNU stuff anyway
00:57:01 <reldred> I feel like loading QNX up agian, just so I can be hardcore and rebel against the free software movement with my pirated RTOS.
00:57:33 <dragonhorseboy> reldred..hope its not 6.2 which was actually free to home users
00:57:33 <reldred> Plus, their desktop environmet is killer. Photon they call it.
00:57:49 <reldred> dragonhorseboy: 6.3 was better
00:58:26 <reldred> But those trials were pulled a while back, so aren't technically free or legit, thus aquiring them requires acts of piracy ;)
00:59:46 <reldred> 6.2 was crap, 6.3 was released under a limited nature
01:00:06 <Eddi|zuHause> i have no idea what you are talking about...
01:00:13 <reldred> And the trial thing was for devs, you had 90 days dev access iirc before it locked down to 'home use'
01:00:54 <Eddi|zuHause> trial versions are evil
01:01:08 <Eddi|zuHause> they are like drug dealers giving you the first doses for free
01:01:31 <Eddi|zuHause> fucking forums...
01:01:42 <dragonhorseboy> reldred... 6.2 was not crap
01:01:44 <Eddi|zuHause> i always manage to hit the exact time when the backup is running
01:02:29 <dragonhorseboy> and btw the old (still can be found but not always by the http: mean) version of 6.2-based bootdisk can be fun to load as well. even for 1.38MB it still had the web browser included as well
01:02:40 <dragonhorseboy> that showed how tiny it was
01:04:01 <reldred> 6.2 wasn't the floppy image, the floppy image was 4.xx
01:04:53 <reldred> 6.2 and 6.3 were CD only
01:07:43 <dragonhorseboy> reldred... the 4.xx is the old copy
01:07:47 <dragonhorseboy> there was newer one as well
01:08:27 <reldred> Not that I've seen, and I was following it pretty damn closely for a while. It was a roughly 250mb cd image.
01:08:34 <reldred> Still got copies of the iso's at home.
01:09:20 <reldred> I was going to get into security systems at one point and had to brush up on QNX, a lot of the big security systems use QNX over various other unix varients
01:10:21 <reldred> then realized how much of a dogs breakfast the security industry is and kept my attention on data networks and telephony
01:13:00 <reldred> srsly, security is stupid, they deliberately break/change all of the programming software every update just to make things harder
01:13:01 <dragonhorseboy> I never bothered with much of any security stuff at all..I just know about periodical disinfect scan on my main computer (the window one has its own software firewall&av likewise)
01:13:14 <dragonhorseboy> I never touch outlook :P
01:13:31 <reldred> Nah, I'm talking security systems in buildings, hundreds of sensors, door strikes, etc.
01:13:52 <reldred> and the physical hardware that drives them
01:13:53 <dragonhorseboy> yeah I know what you mean
01:14:25 <reldred> it's a silly industry
01:19:46 <reldred> phones are much more fun, they don't break everything deliberately every time a new system comes out :)
01:21:02 <reldred> i'm programming a system now, 24 handsets, 10channel primary rate ISDN, two doorphones with remote operated door locks
01:21:35 <reldred> crazy voicemail system I should probably start programming now -_-
01:23:52 <Eddi|zuHause> <reldred> srsly, security is stupid, they deliberately break/change all of the programming software every update just to make things harder <-- well, that is not as stupid as it sounds... because in that area, it is not so much the question whether there are security holes, but rather how fast they can be found
01:24:20 <Eddi|zuHause> and by building everything from scratch, you get a different set of security holes in each update
01:25:10 <reldred> But, because you change it so often, nobody knows here/why/when those holes are
01:25:19 <reldred> security through obscurity, they're a big fan of that concept
01:25:37 <reldred> Hence why I do phones instead
01:29:09 <Eddi|zuHause> well, the only other option is to make it fully open source
01:29:33 <Eddi|zuHause> which is known to be the more secure variant, but it comes with some implications...
01:30:47 <reldred> Hahaha, that will never happen in the security system business.
01:31:41 <reldred> oh great, this voicemail is still set to year0 unix time
01:33:10 *** dragonhorseboy has left #openttd
01:51:52 <reldred> These voicemail systems are crackers. They ship with the system date completely out of wack, and a login page (to begin the installation of the system) that won't let you login if the voicemail date doesn't match the computers date. So you have to login via ssh, change the time and date manually on CLI, then go back in and accept the license aggreement and do the software install
01:56:44 <reldred> There, silly thing is running now -_-
02:09:13 <reldred> Ooookay, it works -_-

09:51:31 <Svish> hm... regular game folder?
09:51:41 <Svish> local settings`? application data?
09:52:13 <gleeb> Thanks for your help :)
09:52:39 <gleeb> Pfft, no-one reads readmes.
09:52:45 <gleeb> Also, yeah, readme.txt ¬_¬
09:53:06 <dihedral> noone likes answering stuff that is specified in the readme.txt
09:53:20 <Svish> and someone do read them :p
09:53:35 <Svish> hm... my game is lagging slightly... wierd...
09:53:43 <Svish> didn't do that yesterday... =/
09:54:04 <gleeb> dihedral: dihedral The readme is hard to read in notepad :P
09:54:44 <dihedral> so you can read it, right?
09:54:55 <Svish> what is considered a "high setting" for that station spread thing?
09:56:30 <dihedral> that would mean 64 * 64 tiles are possible to be ONE station
09:56:32 <dihedral> is that a high value?
09:56:39 <dihedral> well - it's the maximum possible
09:56:43 <Rubidium> why would the readme be hard to read in notepad?
09:56:53 <Rubidium> it's a plain text file
09:56:56 <Svish> probably cause it has unix line endings
09:56:59 <dihedral> Rubidium, \n as oppose to \r\n
09:57:03 <gleeb> Rubidium: It doesn't have /n/r, just /n
09:57:15 <Rubidium> gleeb: then get one from a proper package
09:57:19 <gleeb> or whatever the slashes are, I always forget P
09:57:48 <gleeb> An incorrectly typed newline. Has anyone told you you're mean, dihedral?
09:57:55 <Svish> dihedral: it says that a high setting for that station spread causes a slow game. just wondering how high that is... increased mine to 24.... how high do people usually have it?
09:58:15 <gleeb> Also, dihedral, the readme is incorrect about the location of the emergency save :)
09:58:15 <Rubidium> hmm, since when aren't those readme files not \r\n anymore on Windows then?
09:58:39 <Svish> maybe someone didn't write it in windiws
09:58:42 <gleeb> Rubidium: I'm using cargodist, that could be the issue.
09:58:45 <dihedral> gleeb, it's either a line ending or it's not
09:58:58 <dihedral> Svish, i use something between 30 and 40 on my server
09:59:22 <dihedral> gleeb, is the 'emergency save' as you tend to call it, not in a path relative to the used config file?
09:59:36 <dihedral> in that case, the readme is not incorrect, you just dont know which config file your game is using
09:59:56 <Rubidium> so someone didn't properly package it
10:00:21 <Rubidium> the *-windows-* packages on binaries.openttd.org all have \r\n
10:00:31 <Rubidium> i.e. Microsoft newlines
10:00:35 <gleeb> dihedral: From the readme: - Attach crash.dmp, crash.log and crash.sav from the data directory if they exist.
10:00:48 <Rubidium> so they load perfectly fine in notepad
10:00:53 <gleeb> They were in the working directory, not the data directory.
10:01:16 <gleeb> Rubidium: Yeah, it's because I'm using Cargodist, not an official build.
10:03:15 <Eddi|zuHause> gleeb: you see, that is not a "proper" package
10:03:23 <dihedral> gleeb, then you dont need to make a crash report if you are using a patched game
10:03:37 <gleeb> Eddi|zuHause: Correct. I did point that out.
10:03:40 <dihedral> and then you probably dont need to find those files
10:04:02 <gleeb> dihedral: I don't intend to. I want to carry on from where I left off, if possible
10:04:07 <Rubidium> if it was 'just' made using 'make bundle_zip' it would be okay, but apparantly getting the right files manually is easier and better

10:29:13 <fonsinchen> and it's not that easy to 'make bundle_zip' on windows. At least I haven't found out where to get a free command line zip for windows.
10:30:09 <Rubidium> anyhow, the compile farm uses a free command line zip for windows
10:32:06 <gleeb> fonsinchen: I was selecting a GRF station to use. I've not been able to reproduce the crash.
10:33:30 <fonsinchen> Probably something else was running in the background.
10:33:49 <fonsinchen> post the previous autosave
10:34:49 <fonsinchen> if you can't find the crash save. There might be no crash save, depends on the type of crash.
10:41:03 <gleeb> I found the crash.sav. It work perfectly. It's a UI bug, I'd guess.
10:42:12 <dihedral> what caused the crash may have been something deeper down than UI :-P
10:44:12 <fonsinchen> if it was a UI problem chances are better that it would be reproducible.
10:45:02 <dragonhorseboy> correct me if I'm wrong but re currency..if the default is pounds at 1x and us was 2x .. I assume it would be 3.5x I was looking for or not if I wanted another currency that was 1.5x us?

10:50:57 <gleeb> Check the readme, just incase someone sarcasms on you.
10:51:22 <dihedral> dragonhorseboy, you can make a custom currency in the config
10:52:08 <iperFlash> Im playing openttd 0.63 verion
10:52:19 <gleeb> dragonhorseboy: 2.0 * 1.5 = 3.0, so you need 3.0 to make a currency that is 1.5 of USD
10:52:20 <dihedral> upgrade, 0.7.1 is new stable
10:52:23 <iperFlash> i'd like to know how i can unlock the tramway construction
10:52:32 <dragonhorseboy> thanks..wasn't too sure if I was getting the math right ;)
10:52:50 <iperFlash> Explain more please
10:53:10 <gleeb> A GRF that implements trams would be useful to you.
10:53:32 <dragonhorseboy> making a new server in a moment and its now set to $30,000CAD :p
10:53:32 <gleeb> There's really nothing more to explain, unless you're not sure what a GRF is?
10:53:33 <dihedral> iperFlash, something like gertrams.grf
10:53:51 <iperFlash> Ya i dont know what is
10:53:59 <iperFlash> It's a file right ?
10:54:07 <iperFlash> From where i can dl it
10:54:15 <iperFlash> a useful link please
10:54:16 <dihedral> google might know :-)
10:55:05 <iperFlash> how can i disable the loading and unloading sistem on stations?
10:55:15 <dihedral> but you can upgrade to the latest stable version and use the online content download from in the game
10:55:22 <gleeb> Why would you not want to load or unload a train?
10:55:42 <dihedral> what would then be the point of stations?
10:55:58 <iperFlash> No you dont got my point
10:56:05 <iperFlash> I want to simple load and unload
10:56:14 <iperFlash> Now it shows me in %
10:56:21 <dihedral> 'advanced settings' to be precise
10:56:48 <gleeb> iperFlash: It's always shown percentages. It takes time to load and unload trains, you know.
10:56:48 <dihedral> there is also a search function
10:57:37 <iperFlash> So i cant disable that ?
10:57:54 <Rubidium> iperFlash: disable gradual loading and disable loading indicators
10:59:10 <Rubidium> or it isn't what I think you're seeing, in which case you haven't been clear enough
10:59:11 <dragonhorseboy> anyone know where ottd even has 'temperatesnowline on' anyway?
10:59:27 <iperFlash> hmm let me search to see.
10:59:31 <dragonhorseboy> I already have this grf parameter to enable snowline but its showing up as error :/
10:59:37 <Rubidium> dragonhorseboy: in the "unsupported GRF stuff" sections
11:00:07 <dragonhorseboy> you mean to tell me ottd only can do snow in arctic maps alone?
11:00:47 <dragonhorseboy> hm..there goes the industry :/
11:05:07 <dragonhorseboy> then..wait...just exactly what is Smooth Snow Transition even doing in Bananas?
11:06:37 <dragonhorseboy> meh guess I'll play mid-east canada alone for now .. BC can wait another day
11:06:38 <Rubidium> even so, what does fix ttd grf bugs do in bananas? It's not needed either

11:07:39 <Rubidium> it's there because someone thought it would be useful to upload; we're not going to check whether it actually works or so ;)
11:10:48 <Ammler> [13:06] <Rubidium> even so, what does fix ttd grf bugs do in bananas? It's not needed either <-- he should have set version to < 0.7
11:14:01 <Rubidium> Ammler: there's no version of openttd that supports content downloading that does need that GRF

15:30:29 * gleeb wonders why they can't be deleted from insode ottd :P
15:30:50 * LadyHawk tried to delete them from the online content window but noticed the missing option
15:43:59 <Svish> how does that online content work anyways? Does it just replace stuff? or is it added? can you turn it on and off afterwards? or do you have to reinstall to get things back to normal?
15:45:26 <dihedral> however, the online content itself just provides means for you to download stuff for openttd in-game
15:45:37 <Ammler> he, was the cheats GUI ever accessable from the menubar?
15:45:48 <dihedral> newgrfs, scenarios, ai's, ai libraries, base graphics sets
15:46:04 <Rubidium> not that I'm aware of, but then who am I?
15:47:18 <Ammler> I can't remember either, but I only know from >=0.4.8
15:47:48 <Rubidium> that's about as much as I know
15:50:36 <Svish> ok, so when you download it nothing really happens?
15:50:43 <Svish> you have to somehow add it to the game yourself?
15:51:54 <LadyHawk> anyone know about a page that changes graphics for the industries in temperate climate?
15:52:15 <LadyHawk> i've bunched a nice bunch of newgrfs together that all work
15:52:16 <dihedral> there is no such thing
15:52:32 <dihedral> pages dont change graphics in openttd :-P
15:52:52 <Ammler> someone told on tt-ms.de, he enabled them that way...
15:53:14 <LadyHawk> i got a landscape thing that changed the fields of the farm
15:53:24 <LadyHawk> but nothing for industries =P
15:53:43 <dihedral> yes, there are ecs and pbi
15:53:53 <LadyHawk> ecs is a madhouse imo
15:54:15 <Rubidium> pikka's base industries
15:54:23 <Rubidium> or something like that
15:55:31 <Rubidium> but that only adds a few industries, i.e. it doesn't change the looks of the existing ones
15:56:43 <glx> it replaces still mill IIRC
15:58:22 <LadyHawk> but with extra industries there's the whole cargo problem again
15:58:33 *** Chicago_Rail_Authority has joined #openttd
15:58:37 <LadyHawk> so i'll skip on this one
15:59:08 <Rubidium> oh, somewhere in the opengfx thread there're a few industry graphics replacing NewGRFs
15:59:20 <Rubidium> with the emphasis on the "somewhere"
16:00:13 <dihedral> then you need a train set
16:00:17 <dihedral> you give up that early?
16:00:33 <Rubidium> maybe even "a opengfx related thread" instead of "the opengfx thread"
16:00:57 *** stuffcorpse has joined #openttd
16:01:40 <LadyHawk> i'm picky with trains
16:01:47 <LadyHawk> trains stay how they are
16:02:07 <dihedral> aye, and enable 'multiple trainsets' or whatever it's called
16:03:09 <gleeb> I much prefer the original trains.

20:42:20 <SmatZ> ah well, it did what I asked it fo
20:42:53 <Eddi|zuHause> the question is if you asked the right question :p
20:43:40 <SmatZ> [22:39:30] <planetmaker> ? 0x10 is = decimal 2? <== I was aswering that
20:44:15 <Yexo> SmatZ: 0x10 isn't binary :)
20:45:13 <Eddi|zuHause> everybody knows that you can handle 11 bits with your fingers
20:45:52 <Eddi|zuHause> if in doubt, just use the compression algorithm that packs n bits into n-1 bits
20:46:57 <SmatZ> Yexo: yeah, but 10 is decimal 2 :)
20:47:32 <SmatZ> Eddi|zuHause: everybody knows such an algorithm ... at least at comp.compression there is someone with such idea from time to time ;)
20:47:58 <SmatZ> or used to be when I was reading it :-/
20:48:17 <Eddi|zuHause> i was taught that people even tried to patent this. applying the algorithm recursively, until you have 1 bit left
20:48:59 <SmatZ> you just have to remember how many times to apply it :)
20:49:58 <Eddi|zuHause> SmatZ: yeah, that's a number of log(n) size, then run the compression algorithm on that again, you get log(log(n)), that can be extended recursively, too
20:50:47 <Eddi|zuHause> you can't argue with the theory!
20:51:18 <Rubidium> but arguably n-1 is infinitively better than log(n)
20:51:19 <Eddi|zuHause> you can do the most amazing things with this algorithm
20:51:48 <Rubidium> because 0 vs 1 as 'smallest size'
20:52:14 <Rubidium> and with n-1 you can compress even further, but you need to add padding ;)
20:52:52 <Eddi|zuHause> hm... i still have no replacement RMB...
20:53:07 <SmatZ> too much strange theory for me :)
20:53:12 <Rubidium> I never had a RMB device

20:54:10 <Rubidium> why do I need fingers to read my brain?
